Sarvanga Takra Dhara

Takra-dhara

In Sarvanga Takra dhara medicated buttermilk is poured in all over Patient’s Body.

 

Materials required:

  1. Undini/Kindi
  2. Vessels-3 (To prepare takra; to prepare amalaki kwatha; to take out takra from droni)
  3. Towels: 3
  4. Cotton plugs: 2
  5. Gauze piece(60 cm): 2
  6. Amalaki Choorna: 200g
  7. Milk: 1.5 litres
  8. Musta: 100g
  9. Oil for talam: 10 ml
  10. Rasnadi Choorna: 5 g
  11. Attendents-2
  12. Drugs like Khadira, Aragvadha Patra, Nimba Patra, Triphala, Haridra.

 

Preparation of the Takra in General:

  1. a) Takra: 1.5 litres of milk diluted with 4 times water is boiled with 100g of skinned and crushed Musta tied in a muslin bag, and is reduced to the original quantity of milk. The bag of medicament is taken out and squeezed well. When cooled, this prepared milk is fermented by the addition of a little sour buttermilk over night. Next morning the fermented medicated curd is churned by adding 500ml of Amalaki kwatha. The butter is removed completely and this mixture is used for dhara after filtering.
  2. b) Amalaki kwatha: 200g of dried Amalaki fruit boiled with 8 litres of water and reduced to 2 litres.1.5 litres of Amalaki kwatha is used to mix with buttermilk & 500ml of that is used to wash the head after the procedure.

Pre-operative measures:

Since it is done as a shamana therapy no poorvakarma is needed. The application of oil on head and body is usually done as a practise. Suitable oils according to roga are selected by the physician for this purpose. The eyes should be covered with eye pads and gauze should be tied around the head above the eyebrows. The ear should be plugged with two cotton pieces.

 

Procedure:

 

The patient should lie in supine position on the droni.

 

In Takra Dhara, one Vessel containing Takra should be kept near the drainage outlet of Taila Dhroni/Massage table so that the after pouring Takra over patients body – The Takra gets collected in this Vessel.

 

Using Undini/Kindi the Takra is taken and poured in Patient’s Body part.

It should be poured to all parts of the body.

 

 

Time to perform the procedure:

Generally the treatment is done in the morning hours, between 7-10 am. If necessary, it can be done between 4-6 pm.

 

Duration:

The process should be done daily for a period of 7 to 14 days. The duration of treatment as well as the time period is according to the nature of the disease and the physical condition of the patient. It is done usually for a fixed time (45minutes to 1 hour).

 

Post-operative procedure:

After the dhara, the head is washed with Amalaki kwatha. Then head should be wiped with towel and rasnadi choorna is applied . Patient is advised to take rest for a period same as the period of the procedure, then to take bath.

 

Complications and management:

Shivering is observed in some patients due to excess sheeta. In such case the procedure is stopped immediately and the patient is managed with ushnopachara.

 

 

Pizhinnu Tadaval

Pizhinju Tadaval

It is a type of Pizhichil or Kayaseka and the procedure is almost similar to that of Pizhichil but here more importance is given for Tadaval or massage rather than pouring of warm Oil – Hence in this procedure only small quantity of Oil is used.

In Pizhinnu Tadaval there is a break after each pouring of Oil, and during this break Tadaval(Massaging) is done for two to three times.

Benefits:-

It acts best in Vata Borne disease like Paralysis, Hemiplegia, Apatantraka, Antarayama, Bahyayama. Akshepa,

 

Females undergo this Ayurvedic procedure during the ninth month of Pregnancy to avoid difficulty in labour.

 

It can be done for rejuvenation as it improves health and their general well – being, It is most efficacious in Nervous disorders, Fractures, Contusive wounds, Dislocation of Joints, Pain and Stiffness of limbs, Rheumatic complaints like Rheumatoid Arthritis,

 

This therapy is a beautiful combination of two classical Ayurvedic treatments, Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation) and is highly effective in Neurological disorders and for prevention of Degenerative changes in the body

 

Procedure:-

 

The Patient is made to sit on the Taila Dhroni/Massage table

The Medicated Oil that should be used for Pizhinnu Tadaval is selected by the Physician according to the Disease condition and Dosha predominance of the patient.

In case of Vata Rakta or Gouty Arthritis, Koshna Sarpi Seka should be done, In healthy patient’s Pizhinnu Tadaval is done as a Rejuvenation using a mixture of Pure Gingely Oil(Tila Taila), Cow’s Ghee(GO GHRTHA).

The same oil selected to do Pizhinnu Tadaval in normal temperature is taken and is applied on the Vertex, Ear and feet of the patient and Sarvanga Abhayanga(Anointing whole body) should be done

In Pizhinnu Tadaval For Paittika Disease non – heated Oil should be used and in disease of Vata – Kapha combination lukewarm oil is used

Amalaki Kalka Talam is applied over the head vertex and then a long band of cloth is tied around the head over forehead and ear.

In Pizhinnu Tadaval four attendants should sit or stand on each side of Taila Dhroni/Massage table.

The Difference between Pizhichil and Pizhinnu Tadaval is that only a small quantity of Oil is used in case of Pizhinnu Tadaval

A small cloth piece that one can hold in hand is to be taken and it should be dipped in warm oil.

After Dipping this cloth is squeezed inside hand fist of the masseur in such a position that the warm oil should flow in a continuous stream through his thumb finger.

After Pouring the Oil a break is given and using the left hand the oil poured part is gently massaged two to three times in such a way that the Oil is guided down with the left hand.

Again the same process should be repeated, for Nervous disorders caused due to Vata – Pitta Derangement the process should be continued for two hours, for Nervous disorders caused due to Vata – Kapha Derangement the process should be continued for One hour. When Perspiration is visible in the armpit, forehead and chest one can assume that Pizhichil is enough.

It is administered in seven standard positions, so that no area of the body is left uncovered.

Pizhinnu Tadaval should be started from limbs and should be ended in Nambhi(Umbilicus) in in clock wise direction at a single squeeze of cloth and is repeated up to 7times.

Charaka Acharya opines that medicines can reach quickly to Srotas and Dhamani from Umbilical region.

In Certain Disease like Akshepa, Antarayama, Pakshavadha, Apatanaka etc Pizhinnu Tadaval should be advised to done two times a day.

After treatment patient is fanned or sprinkled with cold water for some time. Then whole body is gently massaged.

After that using a dry cloth the whole oil should be removed, after removal again fresh oil is applied over head, body and Rasnadi choorna is applied on Vertex and is gently massaged.

The Patient is bathed with cooled boiled water, after bathing he should be provided with water boiled with Dry Ginger and Coriander for drinking. Patient should be given light food only when he is feeling hungry.

Patient is advised to observe proper control over his mind and body from other deeds.

Fresh medicated oil is used every day and the duration of Pizhichil is decided by the Ayurveda expert after the body constitution of the individual has been determined. Normally the treatment may last fourteen to twenty-eight days.

This is a highly rejuvenating treatment that enhances muscular tone and retunes the entire nervous system. It comes as a package in itself – a course of 10 days is necessary to gain its maximum healing potential.

Recommended for: extremely high Vata dosha types, muscular aches and pains, rheumatic problems, osteo arthritis, insomnia, depression, sexual problems. for a wide number of disorders like nervous disorder, fits, blood pressure, paralysis etc.

Pada Dhara/Pada Tala Taila Tarpanam

In case of Pada Dhara/Pada Tala Taila Tarpanam medicated oil is poured to the feet of the patient, especially in the Sole.

Procedure:-

Medicated oil should be taken and it should be made warm by keeping in fire source.

Patient is asked to lie down in the Taila Dhroni/ Massage table in supine position.

This lukewarm oil is poured over patient’s feet in a stream for a stipulated period of time including the soles.

 

Benefits:- It improves Vision, cures Insomnia, Pain in lower limbs

 

Kshira Dhuma

Ksheera Dhooma

In case of Ksheera Dhuma fomentation is done by directing milk vapour steam to patient’s body.

 

Indications:- Facial Palsy, Cervical Disk Prolapse and other disorders, Trigeminal Neuralgia, Mastoiditis, Osteo Arthritis of Jaw, Hanugraha, Manyagraha, Avabahuka(Frozen shoulder), Viswachi.

 

Procedure:-

 

Patient’s body should be anointed using medicated oil in Vertex, Face, Neck and Shoulder, massage is done in upward direction for a small duration.

Patient’s eyes should be covered with two to three lotus petals and above that cotton pieces dipped in cold water is kept and tied with bandage cloth.

Patient is asked to sit comfortably in a stool and his body should be covered with a blanket.

Bala moola kashaya(Decoction) should be made by boiling 100gm bala moola in 1.5l and reducing it to half, to this decoction milk of same quantity of Kashaya should be taken.

Both the Decoction and milk are mixed and taken in a pressure cooker connected with a hollow rubber tube.

Now when vapour comes through the free end of the tube, it should be directed to the oil anointed parts of patient’s body.

This procedure is continued till sweat is seen in patient’s nose and forehead.

Nadi Sweda

In Nadi Sweda, fomentation is done by directing steam coming through a hollow tube to Patients body.

Procedure:-

Patient should be anointed and made to sit in a stool

A pressure cooker is taken and is added with some drugs and sufficient quantity of water. The Drugs taken are according to the disease condition of the patient.

Vata Kaphaja Disease:- Varuna, Guduchi, Sigru, Mulaka, Sarshapa, Vasa, Vamsa, Karanja, Asmantaka, Malati, Tulasi, Brhat Panchamula, Gandhatrina.

Pittanubandhi Vata disorders:- Bhutika, Dashamula, Sura, Dhadhimastu, Mutra, Amla, Sneha

After taking sufficient quantity of drugs and water, the pressure cooker is closed and it should be connected with a hollow tube, therapist should direct the steam coming through hollow tube to patient’s body(Especially to the effected parts).

Longitudinal movements are carried over the limbs and circular movements are carried over the joints with the steam.

This procedure should be done till the appearance of Sudation.

Previously in Olden days this procedure is done by using pot and hollow stem of plants, for this one pot should be kept over the other in inverted position and should be sealed together in the mouth region.

 

In the neck region one hole should be made and there hollow stem of plants is connected with bend at few places, and the free end of the stem is covered with Eranda leaf having 3-5 holes for passage of steam and with this hollow stem, steam is directed to patients body.

 

Pizhichil/Kayaseka

In Pizhichil or Kayaseka patient is made to foment by pouring warm oil over patients body squeezing a small cloth piece dipped in warm oil with massuer’s hand fist over the patient’s body.

 

This therapy is a beautiful combination of two classical Ayurvedic treatments, Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation) and is highly effective in Neurological disorders and for prevention of Degenerative changes in the body. This therapy was mostly used by Maharajas in the olden days, and popularly known as treatment for aristocrats
