Busha/Tusha Pinda Sweda

Kola Kulathadi Pottali Sweda

It is a type of Sweda(Fomentation) in which Bolus(Potali) is made with Busha(Bran Of Rice) as the main Ingredient, hence it got the name Busha Pinda Sweda.

In this Procedure Potali(Bolus) containing Busha as the main ingredient is heated with Medicated Oil and is applied over Patients body. The Procedure is carried out in such a way that the Bolus is made to have sudden contact over each adjacent parts of the body for a fraction of seconds, so that ample heat is transferred to patients body.

 

Indications:- Respiratory Disease, Fever, Visuchika.

Potali(Bolus Preparation):-

Busha(Bran of Rice), Rasona, Sigru Twak, Saindhava etc are taken and made into Bolus.

Procedure:-

Patient should be given Abhyanga or Massage First

The Bolus or Potali is kept in a pan with sufficient quantity of Medicated Oil and is Heated.

The Therapist should be careful regarding the temperature of Potali or Bolus, Inorder to check hotness of the bolus – he can touch the bolus with the back side of his palm.

After feeling that the temperature of the bolus is suitable, the therapist can use it over patient’s afflicted body parts.

The application of the bolus to the body is in such a manner that the Bolus is made to have a contact with body part by placing it for a fraction of seconds and then it should be placed to the adjacent area.

One can even give a Kneading movement with the Bolus.

It should be remembered that if bolus is kept for more time on the body, patient may not be able to withstand the heat.

When therapist feels that the temperature has reduced, he should re – heat it by keeping it on the Pan.

It should be performed for 20 – 30 mins.

After finishing the procedure, Patient’s head should be applied with Rasnadi Choorna and Patient is advised to take a warm water Bath.

 

 

Anda Sweda/Mutta Kizhi

It is a type of Ushma Sweda, in this Bolus(Potali) is made with Egg as the main ingredient, hence it got the name as Anda Sweda.

In this Procedure Potali(Bolus) containing Egg as the main ingredient is heated with Medicated Oil and is applied over Patients body. The Procedure is carried out in such a way that the Bolus is made to have sudden contact over each adjacent parts of the body for a fraction of seconds, so that ample heat is transferred to patients body

Indications:- Post Polio Residual Paralysis, Spinal Myelopathy, Traumatic Conditions

It is mainly of two types where in one can be used for one day and the other type can be used for Three days.

Anda Sweda:- Type 1

Ingredients:- Lemon, Egg Yolk, Powders of Kola Kulathadi Choorna, Methika, Shathahva, Haridra,.

One Lemon is taken and is cut into small pieces and is fried in a frying pan.

When the Yellow color of Lemon starts to fade, all the powders are added and fried.

To this Yolks of 10 boiled egg are added and mixed well.

After proper mixing, it should be taken off from fire source.

This mixture should be equally put into two piece of Cloths respectively and they are tied individually into a bolus.

 

Anda Sweda Type 2:-

 

Using Adequate Oil scramble 24eggs in the frying pan

24 Lemons are taken and is cut into small pieces and is fried in a frying pan.

When the Yellow color of Lemon starts to fade, all the powders are added and fried.

To this add the Scrambled egg and mix well

After proper mixing, it should be taken off from fire source.

This mixture should be equally divided and put into piece of Cloths and after putting they are tied individually into a bolus.

The Bolus or Potali is kept in a pan with sufficient quantity of Medicated Oil and is Heated.

Kola Kulathadi Potali Sweda

Kola Kulathadi Pottali Sweda

So it literally means that in this procedure Swedana or Fomentation is made with the help of a Potali(Bolus) made of medicinal plants like Kola, Kulatha, Amarataru, Yava, Mishi, Masha, Atasi,Vacha, Kushta, Rasna, Taila Phala’s like Tila, Nalikera, Eranda, Sarshapa, Karpasa – that is heated with Medicated Oil is applied over Patients body.

It is done in such a way that the Bolus is made to have sudden contact over each adjacent part of the body for a fraction of seconds, so that ample heat is transferred to patients body

Indications:- Arthritis, Involuntary Painful contractions of Muscles and all types of Vataja Roga

This advised to be used in Utkarika form of fomentation, but in Kerala, it is used as Potali Sweda.

 

 

Preparation of Potali(Bolus):- Above Said Drugs are taken and Crushed well, it is cooked in Amla Kanji that is 16times quantity of the seeds taken. Heating is continued till the liquid is evaporated. After getting boiled, these mixture are made into a Paste.

Then the mixture should be equally put into two piece of Cloths respectively and they are tied individually into a bolus.

Procedure:-

The Bolus or Potali is kept in a pan with sufficient quantity of Medicated Oil and is Heated. In some cases when Rooksha Sweda is intended Kanji is used to heat bolus instead of Taila.

The Therapist should be careful regarding the temperature of Potali or Bolus, Inorder to check hotness of the bolus – he can touch the bolus with the back side of his palm.

After feeling that the temperature of the bolus is suitable, the therapist can use it over patient’s afflicted body parts.

Dhanya Potali Sweda

Dhanya Pottali Sweda

 

Dhanya means Seeds of medicinal plants. Pinda or Potali means a bolus. Sweda means Fomentation or sudation.

So it literally means that in this procedure Swedana or Fomentation is made with the help of a Potali(Bolus) containing Seeds of medicinal plants especially Corns and Pulses, that is heated with Medicated Oil is applied over Patients body.

It is done in such a way that the Bolus is made to have sudden contact over each adjacent part of the body for a fraction of seconds, so that ample heat is transferred to patients body

Indications:- Arthritis, Involuntary Painful contractions of Muscles.

 

Preparation of Potali(Bolus):- One to two Pala of dry seeds like Kulaththa is taken and is cooked in water that is 16times quantity of the seeds taken. After getting boiled, these seeds are made into a Paste.

Optionally according to Vaidhya’s Yukti Vatanashaka drugs can also be mixed in this like powders of Satapushpa, Methika, Saindhava after proper mixing the mixture should be equally put into two piece of Cloths respectively and they are tied individually into a bolus.

Valuka Pinda Sweda

valuka Pinda Sweda

It is a Rooksha type of Sweda and is applied without Oleation or Abhyanga

Valuka means sand and in this particular procedure, sand is taken in a cloth and made into bolus(Pinda) and Swedana is done with this bolus by heating it with Hot Kanji(According to Bhaishajya Ratnavalikara).

After heating – It should be applied over Patients body, in such a way that the Bolus is made to have sudden contact over each adjacent part of the body for a fraction of seconds, so that ample heat is transferred to patients body

Indications:- Sama Roga’s, Amavata(Rheumatoid Arthritis), Urusthambha(Stiffness of Thighs), Medo Roga, Granthi(Glandular abnormalities), Kapha – Medavrita Vata

 

Characterestic Features of Sand that should be taken:-

It should be free from thorn, Clear, Not Too Fine Nor too big

 

 

Preparation of Potali(Bolus):-

Sand with the above said qualities are taken and should be equally put into two piece of Cloths respectively and they are tied individually into a bolus.

Procedure:-

Since it is a Rooksha type of Sweda given in Sama conditions, Patient need not be given Abhyanga or Massage.

The Bolus or Potali is kept in a pan with sufficient quantity of Kanji and is Heated(As Recommended by Bhaishajya Ratnakara, one can heat sand even without dipping it in hot Kanji)

The Therapist should be careful regarding the temperature of Potali or Bolus, Inorder to check hotness of the bolus – he can touch the bolus with the back side of his palm.

After feeling that the temperature of the bolus is suitable, the therapist can use it over patient’s afflicted body parts.

Jambira Pinda Sweda(Naranga Kizhi)

Jambeera Pinda Sweda

In Jambira Pinda Sweda, Potali(Bolus) containing Lemon which is heated with Medicated Oil is applied over Patients body, in such a way that the Bolus is made to have sudden contact over each adjacent part of the body for a fraction of seconds, so that ample heat is transferred to patients body

Indications:- Amavata(Rheumatoid Arthritis), Osteo Arthritis, Muscular Cramps, Avabahuka, Stiffness of Joints.

 

Ingredients:- Lemon, Powders of Methika, Satahva, Haridra, Lasuna, Saindhava, Castor Oil

Preparation of Potali(Bolus):- First of all 2 to 3 Lemon are taken and cut each of them into 4 pieces, Add equal quantity of scraped coconut Kernel

This mixture should be added to a frying Pan and all the above mentioned powders should be added (Adding of Rasona or Garlic is Optional)

Afterwards this mixture should be fried with suitable medicated Oil.

It should be taken off from frying pan when it gets a brown color.

This fried mixture should be equally put into two piece of Cloths respectively and they are tied individually into a bolus.

Procedure:-
