Dhanyamla Dhara

In case of Dhanyamla Dhara, fomentation is induced by Pouring warm Dhanyamla over Patients body using a Undini or Kindi.

In Classics Charaka opines that Seka with Amla Drava is good to treat Vata – Kapha Pradhana Vata-Rakta(Gouty Arthritis).

Indications:- Amavata, Ankolyzing Spondilitis, Obesity.

 

It acts best in Vata Borne disease like Paralysis, Hemiplegia, Apatantraka, Antarayama, Bahyayama. Akshepa,

 

It is most efficacious in Nervous disorders, Pain and Stiffness of limbs, Rheumatic complaints like Rheumatoid Arthritis,

 

Procedure:-

 

The Patient is made to sit on the Taila Dhroni/Massage table

Oil in normal temperature is taken and is applied on the Vertex, Ear and feet of the patient and Sarvanga Abhayanga(Anointing whole body) should be done

Amalaki Kalka Talam is applied over the head vertex and then a long band of cloth is tied around the head over forehead and ear.

Afterwards Patients is asked to lie down in supine position.

In Dhanyamla Dhara, one Vessel containing Dhanyamla should be boiled with fire source, The Vessel should be kept near the drainage outlet of Taila Dhroni/Massage table so that the after pouring Dhanyamla over patients body – The Dhanyamla gets collected in this Vessel and gets heated.

 

Using Undini/Kindi the Dhanyamla is taken and poured in Patient’s Body part.

It should be poured to all parts of the body.

Bashpa Sweda

In case of Bashpa Sweda patient sitting in a closed Steam Cabin (Bashpa Swedana Yantra) is made to foment by passing vapour steam through an inlet of the steam chamber. Rather than any other Swedana(Fomentation) measures, this method causes profuse sweating.

 

Indications:- Sciatica, Paralysis, Trikagata Vata, Mamsagata Vata.

Procedure:-

Patient’s body should be anointed with medicated oil.

The Bashpa Swedana Yantra or Steam chamber has a front door through which the patient can get in.

The Chamber has an opening in the upper part.

It has a height adjustable seat, the patient should be seated in the chamber by adjusting the seat according to his height so that the body part from neck should be seen outside the upside opening of the chamber, the gap between neck and the opening is closed with a cloth.

Now the Vapour made by boiling medicate Kashaya(decoction) in a pressure cooker can be passed to the inlet of steam chamber by a connecting the cooker and the inlet with a hollow rubber tube.

Patient is asked to change positions during the procedure and the temperature should be monitored to avoid burns.

After Proper fomentation, patient’s body is wiped with a dry cloth and he should reside in a room without exposing to wind by covering his body with a blanket for one hour.

After one hour he should have bath in lukewarm water.

Avagaha Swedana

Avagaha Sweda

In case of Avagaha Swedana, patient is made to foment by sitting in a tub which is filled with Medicated Kashaya(Decoction), Medicated Oil, Gomutra, Kanji.

Indications:- Prushta Shoola(Pain in the Gluteal region), Sroni Shoola, Pain in Pelvic region, Kati Shoola(Pain in Lumbar region), Trika Shoola, Pain in Sacral, Coccyx region, Grudhrasi(Sciatica), Ashmari(Calculi), Arshas(Piles).

Procedure:-

Patient’s body should be anointed with lukewarm Oil.

The Tub should be filled either with Medicated Oil or Gomutra(Cow’s Urine) or Kanji(Rice water) or Decoction(Kashaya)

In case of Disease like Parkinsonism the whole body should be immersed in Kashaya(Decoction) made up of Vatahara drugs.

In case of Decoction, the drugs used for making decoction depends upon the Dosha Predominance.

Vata Kaphaja Disease:- Varuna, Guduchi, Sigru, Mulaka, Sarshapa, Vasa, Vamsa, Karanja, Asmantaka, Malati, Tulasi, Brhat Panchamula, Gandhatrina.

Pittanubandhi Vata disorders:- Bhutika, Dashamula, Sura, Dhadhimastu, Mutra, Amla, Sneha

After filling anyone of the above said medium in the tub, patient should be asked to sit in the tub.

The Level of the medium should be up to patient’s umbilical region and the height of oil over the body surface should be 6 angula.

Uniform temperature should be maintained by replacing the cold medium in the tub with hot medium.

The Duration of this procedure is 45mins, after the completion of procedure Raasnadi Powder is applied over the head vertex and the body is wiped with a dry cloth

Patient is asked to take rest for an hour and later should take bath in lukewarm water.

 

Panni Kizhi(Karpasa Beeja Pinda Sweda)

Pannikizhi Karpasa Beeja Pinda sweda

 

In this procedure Swedana or Fomentation is made with the help of a Potali(Bolus) made of Cottons Seeds, the bolus is heated with Medicated Oil and then applied over Patients body.

It is done in such a way that the Bolus is made to have sudden contact over each adjacent part of the body for a fraction of seconds, so that ample heat is transferred to patients body

Preparation of Potali(Bolus):- Required amount of Cotton is taken according to the body size of Patient. Then they are equally divided and put into two piece of Cloths respectively and then they are tied individually into a bolus.

Indications:- Bala and Sukumara.

Procedure:-

Patient should be given Abhyanga or Massage First

The Bolus or Potali is kept in a pan with sufficient quantity of Medicated Oil and is Heated. In some cases when Rooksha Sweda is intended Kanji is used to heat bolus instead of Taila.

The Therapist should be careful regarding the temperature of Potali or Bolus, Inorder to check hotness of the bolus – he can touch the bolus with the back side of his palm.

After feeling that the temperature of the bolus is suitable, the therapist can use it over patient’s afflicted body parts.

The application of the bolus to the body is in such a manner that the Bolus is made to have a contact with body part by placing it for a fraction of seconds and then it should be placed to the adjacent area.

One can even give a Kneading movement with the Bolus.

It should be remembered that if bolus is kept for more time on the body, patient may not be able to withstand the heat.

When therapist feels that the temperature has reduced, he should re – heat it by keeping it on the Pan.

It should be performed for 20 – 30 mins.

After finishing the procedure, Patient’s head should be applied with Rasnadi Choorna and Patient is advised to take a warm water Bath.

Mamsa Kizhi Sweda

Mamsa Kizhi

This is a special type of Pinda Sweda, and there by the Bolus is specially prepared with Ingredients like Mamsa(Flesh), here Swedana or Fomentation is made with the help of this Potali(Bolus).

It is done in such a way that the Bolus is made to have sudden contact over each adjacent part of the body for a fraction of seconds, so that ample heat is transferred to patients body

Indications:- Muscular Wasting, It can be applied to a single part or the whole body wasting to promote growth.

 

Preparation of Potali:-

1.36litre Kashaya of Bala is made, to this 9ounce of Cow milk, 1lbs of Navara rice, 500gm of Goat flesh etc is added and heated till the Rice and Flesh gets cooked properly.

Then this whole mixture is divided into 8 equal parts and a Potali(Bolus) is made with each equal part after putting it into a cloth and tying it.

Now for heating this Potali(Bolus) it should be Kept in a pan with mixed solution of 1.36l of Bala Kwatha and 9 ounce of Cow milk.

Procedure:-

Patient should be given Abhyanga or Massage First

The Bolus or Potali is kept in a pan with sufficient quantity of Medicated Oil and is Heated.

The Therapist should be careful regarding the temperature of Potali or Bolus, Inorder to check hotness of the bolus – he can touch the bolus with the back side of his palm.

Karisha Pinda Sweda

In this type of Fomentation Technique, Bolus(Potali) is made with Ingredients such as Goat Dung, Saindhava, Juice of Tamarind Leaves.

In this Procedure Bolus(Potali) made with Ingredients such as Goat Dung, Saindhava, Juice of Tamarind Leaves are Boiled in Dhanyamla and fomentation is done by applying this Potali(Bolus) over Patients body.

The Procedure is carried out in such a way that the Bolus is made to have sudden contact over each adjacent parts of the body for a fraction of seconds, so that ample heat is transferred to patients body

Indications:- Neurological Disorders.

Procedure:-

It can be done in 3 ways:-

  1. Directly
  2. By Boiling in Dhanyamla
  3. By Ushma Sweda

 

Procedure Done by Boiling Potali(Bolus) in Dhanyamla:-
