Reference : Charaka samhita sutrastana 25, Dhanwantari nigantu.

Bala choorna is a powder made by drying and pounding root of Bala which is known by the Botanical Name Sida Cordifolia

Ayurvedic properties:

Rasa: Madhura

Virya: Sheeta

Vipaka: Madhura

Dosha karma: Vatapittahara

Roga Karma: Vatavyadhi, raktapitta, kshaya, Rasayana and vrishya.

With all the above said properties, this particular medicinal formulation can be used in Disease caused by the aggravation of Vata Dosha like degenerative disorders, muscle weakness, general body weakness, muscular dystrophy, body ache and arthritis.

 

Bhringaraja Choorna

Bhringaraja Choorna

Reference : Dhanwantari nigantu.

Bhringaraja Choorna is made by pounding and powdering dried Bhringaraja or Eclipta alba(Botanical Name).

Bhringaraja is mentioned as an excellent drug for Rasayana purpose, at the same time it is also good for Hair related problems etc

Properties:

Rasa: Katu, Tikta.

Virya: Ushna

Vipaka: Katu

Dosha karma: Kaphavatahara

Roga Karma: Rasayana, balya, chakshushya, pandu, twakrog, shotha, hridya, shwasa and kasahara.

With all the above said properties, works excellent in improving hair growth, preventing hair fall, premature greying of hair and dandruff.

Internally used in Jaundice, skin diseases, anemia, asthma and headache.

Bhrungarajasava is also prepared using Eclipta Alba

Dose : For External Use: Bringaraja processed with coconut oil used for external application or bringaraja churna mixed with coconut oil or water used for external application over the scalp. For Internal Use: 2 to 6 grams, two times daily along with Hot water before or after food as directed by physician.

Bhumiamalaki Churna

Reference : Bhavaprakasha nigantu.

Bhumiamalaki Churna has its Botanical Name as Phyllanthus niruri. When this particular drug is dried – pounded and made into a powder, it is called as Bhumiamalaki Churna

Properties:

Rasa: Tikta kashaya

Virya: Sheeta

Vipaka: Madhura

Dosha karma: Kaphapittahara

Roga Karma: Kamala, kasa, shwasa, raktapitta and pipasa.

With all these above said properties, it becomes an excellent remedy for disease manifested in Liver such as:- cirrhosis of liver, Hepatitis A, Gall stone, Ascitis, fatty liver, urinary calculi, acts like diuretic, improves generall immunity.

Dose : 2 to 6 grams, two times daily along with Hot water or honey.

Reference : Dhanwantari nigantu.

Bibhithaki or Baheda Churna has its main Ingredients as Bibhitaki (Terminali Bellerica). A powder is made by grinding this particular drug and this powder is called as Bibhitaki choorna.

Properties:

Rasa: Kashaya

Virya: Ushna

Vipaka: Madhura

Dosha karma: Kaphapittahara

Roga Karma: Kasa, shwasa, chakshushya and kesha vriddikara.

With the all above mentioned properties, this medicine is best indicated in Disease like, Skin diseases, cough, cold, asthma, anxiety, stress and insomnia.

Dose : 2 to 6 grams, twice daily along with Hot water or honey, before or after food as directed by physician.

Healthy sinuses are filled with air. Sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. But when the Sinus become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection.

Conditions that can cause sinus blockage include:

  • Allergic rhinitis, which is swelling of the lining of the nose
  • Small growths in the lining of the nose called nasal polyps
  • A deviated septum, which is a shift in the nasal cavity
  • Swelling inside the nose like from a common cold
  • Blocked drainage ducts
  • Structural differences that narrow those ducts
  • Immune system deficiencies or medications that suppress the immune system

For children, things that can cause sinusitis include:

  • Allergies
  • Illnesses from other kids at day care or school
  • Pacifiers
  • Bottle drinking while lying on the back
  • Smoke in the environment

Types of Sinusitis

  • Acute sinusitis usually starts with coldlike symptoms such as a runny, stuffy nose and facial pain. It may start suddenly and last 2-4 weeks.
  • Subacute sinus inflammation usually lasts 4 to 12 weeks.
  • Chronic inflammation symptoms last 12 weeks or longer.
  • Recurrent sinusitis happens several times a year.

Symptoms:

  1. Acute sinusitis: Severe headache, facial pain, heaviness of head, pain over involved sinuses, fever, nasal stuffiness, may associated with thick yellow or green nasal discharge, symptoms may last for 10 to 14 days.
  2. Subacute sinusitis: Moderate Headache which disturb regular activity, heaviness of forehead, pain around involved sinus, Nasal stuffiness and may associate with yellowish or greenish mucus discharge.
  3. Chronic Sinusitis: Symptoms same as subacute but in less severe form, may associate with yellowish or greenish mucus discharge, Halitosis, post nasal drip and the symptoms last for more than 3 months.

Investigations: X-ray, CT scan, Nasal endoscopy

Treatment:-

Avoid or restrain from the causative factors like

Diet:

  • Avoid Kaphakara aharas(Snigdha, sheeta, pichila and kledayukta)like ice cream, curds, milk, banana, oily, fried, Chinese and junk foods.
  • Avoid fruits especially in the night when you are suffering from sinusitis.
  • Avoid excessive drinking of water, drink only warm water when you feel thirst.
  • Food should be processed with Turmeric, Pepper and Ginger.

Lifestyle:

  • Avoid head bath and oil application.
  • Avoid day sleep, Suppression of natural urges.
  • Don’t directly expose to Air-condition, fan or sitting close to a window while travelling in an open vehicle.
  • Steam inhalation twice daily, the water may have camphor or few drops of Eucalyptus oil.
  • Warm compress over affected part gives relief from pain and heaviness.

Ayurveda Treatment concept:

  • Kaphaja shirashoola chikitsa.
  • Srotoshodhana.
  • In Pitta and Raktadusti associated condition according to prakopa of anubhanda dosha.

In Acute Sinusitis (Kaphaja) treatments like Mukhabhyanga, Swedana helps to vilayana of kapha and Nasya with swarasa like gudardraka nasya which does the shirorechana. Avoid sneha nasya in acute stage, it will worsen the condition. Internal medicine should be kapha pachana, lekhana and srotoshodhana.

In Chronic sinusitis kapha will be in ruksha and leena stage, so the aim of treatment should be kapha vilayana by snehana and swedana followed by Nasya with shirovirechana sneha nasya like Shadbindu taila or Anutaila.

Treatment Procedures:

1. Mukhabhyanga: Karpoora taila

2. Swedana: Nadi sweda or steam inhalation( Hot water with eucalyptus oil few drops and camphor)

3. Nasya:

Swarasa Nasya:

  1. Gudardraka nasya(Guda 4 pinch+Ardraka swarasa1 teaspoon, Dose: 4 to 6 drops each nostril after proper snehana and swedana).
  2. Ardraka swarasanasya( Ardrakaswarasa 1teaspoon+Milk 1teaspoon)

Snehanasya: 1 Anutaila 2.Shadbindu taila

4. Lepa:

  1. Rasnadi Churna: External application with warm water or lemon juice.
  2. Kacchoradi Churna: External application along with warm water over effected sinus.

Internal Medicines:

1. Kashyam:

  • Varunadi Kashayam (Kapha vatahara)
  • Amruthothara (Kapha vatahara, pachana, kaphanulomaka – Useful in Acute stage)
  • Dashamoola katutraya( Sub acute and chronic stage)
  • Guggulutiktakam kashayam
  • Shirovirechaniya Gana Kashayam
  • In acute Headache Pathyadi Shadanagam Kashayam + Varunadi Kashayam
  • In acute Headache Pathyadi Shadanagam Kashayam + Dashamoola Kattuttraya

2. Churna:

  • Talisadi churna(Kaphavatahara, lekhana)
  • Sitopaladi churna(Pittakaphahara)
  • Laghu Sutshekhara mishrana(Pittakaphahara, ruksha, Sinusitis associated with thin discharge)

Allergic Rhinitis or Hay fever is an inflammatory response of nasal mucosa to airborne allergens (particles that provoke an allergic reaction). Allergy is an abnormal function of immune system. When our immune system fail to recognize common dust, pollen etc and treat like a harmful allergen, The inhaled allergens activate Mast cells and Basophils. These cells release Histamine and chemical mediator. Histamine is a natural chemical that defends your body from the allergen.

As a final outcome there will be symptoms in nose, eyes, ear, throat and palate like repeated sneezing and thin watery discharge from the nose and itchy eyes.

Symptoms include:

  • Early morning sneezing or recurrent sneezing when exposed to allergic factors.
  • Nasal congestion.
  • Thin watery discharge from the nose.
  • Itching in the eyes, ear, throat and nose.
  • Post nasal drip
  • Sore throat
  • Anosmia
  • sneezing
  • a runny nose
  • a stuffy nose
  • an itchy nose
  • coughing
  • a sore or scratchy throat
  • itchy eyes
  • watery eyes
  • dark circles under the eyes
  • frequent headaches

Causes:

  1. Seasonal allergic causes (symptoms appear in particular season): Pollen’s, dust mites, Grass dust, fungal spores etc.
  2. Perennial allergic causes (symptoms present throughout the year): House dust, chemicals, Animal dandruff, cockroach, wood dust etc.
  3. Strong irritants like smoke, odors, humidity of the atmosphere and Perfumes.
  4. Some external factors can trigger or worsen this condition, including:
    • grass
    • dust
    • animal dander, which is old skin
    • cat saliva
    • mold
    • Pollen
    • cigarette smoke
    • chemicals
    • cold temperatures
    • humidity
    • wind
    • air pollution
    • hairspray
    • perfumes
    • colognes
    • wood smoke
    • fumes

Treatment:-

Avoid the above said factors and the following factors:-

  • Avoid exposure to known allergens and factors that trigger the symptoms like animal dandruff, pillow or mattress, house dust and chemicals.
  • Keep windows closed during pollen season and while travelling in an open vehicle.
  • Wash the hands after petting the animals.
  • Steam inhalation twice daily, the water may have camphor or few drops of Eucalyptus oil.
  • Avoid cold water head bath. Apply Rasnadi churna over Vertex after the head bath.
  • Avoid Smoking, day sleep and suppression of natural urges.
  • Do regular Pranayama.
  • Use the food which is processed with Turmeric, Pepper and Ginger.
  • Avoid Kaphakara aharas(Snigdha, sheeta, pichila and kledayukta)like icecream, curds, milk, banana, oily, fried, Chinese and junk foods.
  • Avoid excessive drinking of water, Drink only warm water when you feel thirst.

  • In Pitta and Raktadusti associated condition treat according to prakopa of anubhanda dosha.

In most of the patients Allergic rhinitis seen in early morning in Kapha kala. If you assess the nidana, there will be a history of intake of kaphakara kledayukta ahara like kaanji, curds, milk, excessive intake of water etc, especially in the night time. By following pathya there will be a gradual reduction in the symptoms. Select the oushadha dravyas having Kaphavatahara ruksha, ushna, pachana and vatanulomaka properties.
